January NewsletterJane Wallace Alling , Board of Advisor Member Jane is retired as Public Services Librarian at The McLean Library, Pennsylvania Horticultural Society in Philadelphia. She received a B.A. in Political Science & History from Wilson College, Chambersburg, PA, and an M.S. in Library Science from Drexel University, Philadelphia, PA. After graduation from Wilson, she was a civilian employee at the National Security Agency. In addition to her birthplace of Hanover, PA, Jane has lived in Baltimore, St. Paul, Phoenix, Bucks County (PA), Williamsburg, VA, and Philadelphia. She has traveled to Paris and London. Volunteer activities have included Pennsbury Manor (William Penn’s home on the Delaware River), The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, the National Center for State Courts, the Philadelphia Flower Show, and served as a majority inspector at a Philadelphia election poll site. Jane has been a member of Old Pine since 2001, served as a Deacon 2017-2020, and joined the Old Pine Conservancy in 2017. Jane was responsible for the initial research into the Old Pine Street Church gravesite of former Philadelphia Orchestra conductor, Maestro Eugene Ormandy. Jane was born on July 4th and has celebrated a love of history ever since. Growing up a few miles from Gettysburg, her grandfather, a history teacher, would lead family tours of the battlefield. Jane has led tours of the colonial gardens in Williamsburg, and was administrator of Early Morning tours at the Flower Show. Jane is the mother of a daughter and a son, and has four granddaughters. She enjoys reading, knitting, and follows the Phillies, Eagles, Flyers, and NCAA basketball. As a member of the Council on Botanical and Horticultural Libraries, she has visited libraries and gardens throughout the United States. As a voluntary advisor to the Old Pine Conservancy Borad, Jane continues to assist in the outreach programs we are engaged in.
