Mary Whiting Brainerd was not only the wife of the Rev. Thomas Brainerd at Old Pine Street Church in Philadelphia, she was also a mother, author and abolitionist. Ahead of her time as a woman in mid 1800s, Mary experienced significant loss in her life, and overcame such loss through courage and perseverence. "The Brainerd Quilt" housed at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, was given to Mary in 1846 by the women of Old Pine Street Church is a masterpiece of design and important for its creation as an instrument of solace.
